Broward Lieutenant Connected To Ponzi Schemer Sentenced, Taken Into Custody
Posted July 21st, 2014 @ 10:04am

Fired Broward Sheriff's Office Lieutenant David Benjamin was sentenced to the maximum five years in prison he faced for his role in the Scott Rothstein Ponzi scheme.

Benjamin had admitted that he abused his power by sending deputies under his command to arrest and intimidate perceived enemies of Rothstein and his allies.

Benjamin also helped Rothstein load hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and millions of dollars worth of jewelry into a private plane, as Rothstein escaped to Morocco.  (Rothstein later returned to South Florida, pleaded guilty, and is serving 50 years in federal prison.)

Benjamin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion and violate civil rights.

He received no leniency from the judge for cooperating in other related cases.
