(Orlando, FL) - School is set to begin for students across Florida next month and the state's top educator says he is ready to protect parents' rights and to enforce the new law banning cell phones in class.
During Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, the new commissioner, Anastasios Kamoutsas, warned superintendents who violate teacher or parental rights will be dealt with.
Kamoutsas says, "I sent a memo to all school district superintendents reinforcing my support of the rights of our parents and educators. And putting the superintendents on notice that if they violate these rights, I will be knocking on their door."
The commissioner also reminded districts about an important tool, the My Florida Schools portal, that provides parents with every educational option available in their area.
This school year (2025-26) will also be the first where cell phones are not allowed during the entire school day for elementary and middle school students. High school students can use their phone outside of class with teacher permission.
Kamoutsas says he is also looking forward to awarding the "Florida District Teacher of the Year" next week.
School starts on August 11th in Broward and the 14th in Miami-Dade.
